Ullate. The Dance of Life

About the film

Ullate. The Dance of Life is a documentary by Elena Cid about Spanish dancer, choreographer and teacher Víctor Ullate, told in his own words. The film opens in December 2019 with the closure of the Víctor Ullate Ballet, ending more than forty years of dance history, and travels back through his life: his beginnings in Zaragoza, his years as a principal dancer with Maurice Béjart's Ballet of the 20th Century in Brussels, his creation of Spain's first national ballet company, the Ballet Nacional Clásico, and the school that trained a golden generation of dancers who went on to the world's great ballet companies.

It is also a journey through the history of classical ballet in Spain. Featuring Nacho Duato, Joaquín de Luz, Mónica Cruz, Lola de Ávila, Carmen Roche, Yolanda Correa, Iana Salenko, José Manuel Garrido and Víctor Ullate Roche, among others. Filmed at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, the Teatro Principal in Zaragoza, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Canfranc, Brussels and the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Produced by Disentropic Films in co-production with RTVE, Spain's public broadcaster, the film premiered at the 27th Málaga Film Festival to an eight-minute standing ovation.
